Operation Cornbread Launches

Keep the cornbread comin' at Sisters Of The Road this May, June and July by making a donation today!

To offset low summer giving, Sisters Of The Road is holding a special Operation Cornbread fundraising campaign this May, June and July. To keep the cornbread comin', Sisters' goal is to raise $25,000 in individual, business and faith community donations that will be matched 2 to 1, and will provide 300-350 meals a day over the summer to very low income individuals and families.

The summer months are filled with family fun and vacations for many people, while our community at Sisters continues to yearn for nutritious, low-cost meals; free feminine hygiene items and infant supplies, including diapers; a clean and safe restroom; and a place to perform dignified barter work. The community can help in the following ways:

  • All donations from May 1st to July 31st will be matched 2 to 1 by our Operation Cornbread Matching Grants. Donate at Sisters' office: 618 NW Davis, Portland, OR 97209, or online by clicking the green Donate Now button on the right of this email.
  • Become a Sustaining Member. Sisters currently has 346 donors who give monthly as Sustaining Members. Please join this pool of generous donors by signing up for a monthly deduction from your bank account or credit card. Our goal is to add 30 new sustaining members to our program this summer. For more information contact Kelly at 503-222-5694 ext. 12 or by email.

Sisters Honored with Agency Excellence Award from Oregon Food Bank

Sisters Of The Road has been named a 2009 Oregon Food Bank Agency Excellence Award winner in the category of Excellence in Client Services. The award comes with a $500 prize to support the 300-350 warm, nutritious meals served in our Cafe each day.

In an average month, the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) provides our Cafe with over 50% of the food we need to cook up hundreds of balanced meals each day. We are thrilled that OFB recognizes the strength of Sisters' philosophies of gentle personalism and nonviolence. As we at Sisters Of The Road always say (and believe wholeheartedly), "Here there are no strangers, just friends we've never met!" This is central to our approach to each person who walks through our doors. When you visit Sisters, you are much more than just a customer, you are a whole person and a friend. Thank you Oregon Food Bank!

Dave's Killer Bread Saves a Slice for Sisters

Local bakery Dave's Killer Bread has partnered with Sisters Of The Road to provide our Cafe with around 3 dozen loaves each week of their delicious, nutritious bread. A couple of months ago, a Dave's delivery driver and ex-prisoner, Ladd, came into our Cafe and experienced Sisters for himself. Ladd was so impressed with Sisters' gentle personalism philosophy and model of Dining with Dignity, he has chosen to personally drop off the donated loaves weekly.

Founder Dave Dahl, himself a recovering addict and ex-con, has made it a point to build his company by hiring people like Ladd who need a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) chance to rebuild their lives, and the result is a successful baking business with incredible bread that's a hit at area grocers and farmer's markets.

Dave's Killer Bread uses great organic whole grains, animal-free ingredients and no preservatives in all their breads. You can look up local stores where Dave's breads are sold at their website, or visit their Healthy Bread Store at 5209 SE International Way, Milwaukie, OR 97222. Thanks to everyone at Dave's Killer Bread!

Thank Our Commissioners and Mayor for Supporting Crucial BHCD Funding

The Mayor just released his budget and the $6.7 million in additional one-time General Fund dollars to preserve vital services and housing for people in crisis will be granted!

Please contact Mayor Adams and our City Commissioners and thank them for prioritizing these critical services. Street Roots has set up a webpage to thank our city leaders; you can send your message to them here.

This success happened thanks to you, and many others like you. Nearly 700 people took action by writing letters, signing petitions, and joining Facebook to help make this happen. Thank you for taking action!
