Sisters Of The Road
Celebrate Genny Nelson

Please join us as we celebrate and give thanks for the vision and work of Genny Nelson, co-founder of Sisters Of The Road, and honor her retirement. We are celebrating Saturday, December 12th from 3pm - 6pm in the Cafe and Personalist Center, 133 NW 6th Ave, Portland.

Genny has been a personal friend and mentor to thousands, including public leaders, school children and Sisters’ staff, volunteers & customers. Her enduring adherence to the tenets of nonviolence and gentle personalism have inspired and touched countless lives over her three decades at Sisters. Genny has won numerous awards, including the 2005 National Caring Award.

In lieu of flowers, Genny asks that people make a contribution to Sisters Of The Road, the organization she helped found and develop and the community she continues to love.

Light refreshments will be served; no RSVP required. We hope you can make it!

RETURNING Sisters' Donors: Your gift will be matched 50 cents for each dollar donated through December. A $100 donation by a returning donor will become a $150 donation. We are over halfway towards reaching our goal! Won't you join us?

In order to receive the new donor match, Sisters must receive at least $60,000 in gifts from NEW donors by midnight on December 31st, 2009. Thank you!
House Keys Not Handcuffs

Sisters Of The Road, as a member of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, will be taking part in a planned action January 20th at the Federal Building in San Francisco. Sisters plans to take 60 people to the event, which is meant to draw attention to the Federal government's failure to provide affordable housing, and to coincide with the anniversary of Barack Obama's first year in office.

Holiday Food and Toy Donations

The winter holiday season is traditionally a time of great generosity, and many of you want to help support our Cafe and the hundreds of hot meals we serve each week day. Put your $$ to work. The best donation we can receive is money, and your donations can be earmarked for Cafe food. Cash gives the Cafe the ability to meet our food needs at wholesale prices!

Information on what foods are most often needed in Sisters' kitchen, click here. If you are still interested in donating food, please respect our guidelines for in kind food donations:
  • Call ahead and talk to a Kitchen Co-manager (503-222-5694 ext 24). Nina or Bob will determine if we can use your donation. Remember, we have limited storage space.
  • Donations of food that haven’t been pre-approved by the kitchen will not be accepted.
  • All donations must meet health codes. Please call for details.
You can also support children who come to Sisters! See our website for more information about donating to Sisters' Toy Drive. We are also accepting donations of infant diapers and wipes; adult diapers and bladder control pads; and feminine hygiene items for this year's limited hygiene drive. Thank you for all your support!
