Happy New Year !

We at Sisters Of The Road wish all of you a joyful and rewarding new year! Here is what you will find in this issue:

Homelessness Ends With a Home
Join us at J20!

On January 20, 2010, Sisters Of The Road, Street Roots and other Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP) member organizations will lead our communities to converge in San Francisco. Together, we will demonstrate our commitment to affordable housing and civil rights for all people. We will call on our local and federal governments to create and fund affordable housing and to stop criminalizing community members experiencing homelessness. Join us in our call for human rights for everyone!

On January 20th, 2009, the Obama administration took office because we believed change was possible. One year later – the change we hoped for is overdue. On January 20th, 2010, thousands of us will stand side by side; we will be the power this administration needs to do what it knows is right!

Organizations throughout our region have endorsed the January 20th action. In the Portland area, these groups are:

Can't join us in San Francisco? Participate in MLK events around Portland!

On Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year, many Sisters community members will be headed to San Francisco to honor MLK’s vision of a just and equitable society. Here in Portland, Sisters will also honor this special day by supporting the great work of organizations that embody the spirit of MLK and sharing information about his vision. For the second year, Sisters has purchased a table at the 24th Annual Skanner Newspaper’s Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast. In the Cafe and Personalist Center, we will post information about MLK’s life and work, and information about other events happening in our community in his honor. Check back at Sisters’ website for updates as we get closer to January 18th, 2010!
Vote YES on Measures 66 & 67

This January, we have the opportunity to protect our schools and critical services when we need them most by voting Yes! on Measures 66 and 67. These measures help protect vital community services by asking households that make more than $250,000 and corporations to pay a little more. Without these measures, many programs and services that are crucial to Sisters’ community will be cut! Some of these programs include:
  • The General Fund Food Program, which is used by the Oregon Food Bank to support its operations.
  • The State Homeless Assistance Program which supports emergency shelter programs and associated services.
  • The Emergency Housing Account which assists persons experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.
Visit Vote Yes for Oregon to take the pledge to vote YES on Measures 66 and 67 now - and spread the word to your friends and family to sign it, too! You can also find out more ways to get involved and support this important campaign at the Vote Yes for Oregon website.

Sisters Of The Road is endorsing a yes vote on Measures 66 and 67. For more information about these two measures and the consequences if they do not pass, please visit the Oregon Center for Public Policy.
Use your voice — Remember to vote for Measures 66 & 67 by Tuesday, January 26th, 2010!

(p.s. TODAY, Tuesday, January 5th is the last day to register to vote. Information on how to register and a link to a voter registration form are here. Many banks, post offices, libraries, schools and DMV offices will also have voter registration cards. Thanks for voting!)

With your generous support, we achieved our goal of raising $270,000 during November and December! Thanks to our NEW donors who were generously matched 1:1 by The Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust, The Collins Foundation, and The Oregon Community Foundation, and all donors who were matched 50 cents for each dollar donated through a generous group of individuals and businesses. DONATE NOW
Sisters' Matching Grant Challenge is over, but we always welcome your support!

$100 can sponsor a person experiencing poverty to travel with us to the J20 Action. Thank you!
Rooms for Peace
Can you house a student January 29-31?

Rooms For Peace, a Sisters' affiliate organization and supporter, is arranging lodging for attendees of the Oregon Student Association's 20th Northwest Student Leadership Conference .

Instead of paying for lodging, these students will stay with local families and donate their lodging money to Sisters Of The Road through Rooms For Peace!

This will be a great way to meet a new young activist or two, and familiarize them with Sisters' model and philosophies of nonviolence and gentle personalism. To find out more and sign up, visit the Rooms For Peace website or email them.
