Sisters Of The Road

Hi - Happy May!

Keep the Cornbread Comin' This Summer!
During May, June and July, Operation Cornbread (our special Summer fund-raising drive) will support the great work of Sisters’ cafe. Our goal: to raise $25,000 from individuals that will be matched two-to-one by Operation Cornbread Matching Grants. Every dollar you donate will become three!

Why a Summer Fund Drive?
Summertime is typically a time of low giving and we’re asking you, our committed supporters, to support our community during these months. Won’t you join us?

In our cafe, Summer means children are out of school and need a safe place to eat and spend time with their family. Seasonal workers, too, come to work in Portland’s agricultural fields and to do day labor, and need a safe, welcoming place to enjoy a solid, low-cost meal.

You Can Help!
Make a donation in May, June or July. Your donation will be matched 2:1 by our Operation Cornbread Matching Grant! Or, become a Sustaining Member. Our goal is to sign up 30 new Sustaining Members during the months of May, June and July. Any monthly amount you feel you can give can be automatically deducted from your credit card or checking account and will become a monthly contribution to Sisters.
Thanks for your help to keep the cornbread comin’ over the summer months (if you have already given - thank you!). For more information, visit our website or contact Marisa Espinoza at (503) 222-5694 ext. 12 or marisa@sistersoftheroad.org.

Sisters' Calls for
Human Rights for All!
If you've been paying attention to our website, Facebook, or, say, The Oregonian, you already know that Sisters, ably led by our Systemic Change Team, is deeply involved in local movements to keep public spaces public, to call for safe and affordable housing for everyone, and police accountability - to name just a few.

Please join us in this movement! This Thursday, May 6th, say no to classism in our laws and yes to healthy communities! Join us at City Hall at 3:00pm (2:30 if you'd like to sign up to testify) for another chance to stop the Sidewalk Management Ordinance. Click here for our most recent Action Alert and lots more information.

Sisters has been actively participating in the People's Movement Assembly. In June 2010, people from around the Americas will assemble in Detroit for the US Social Forum. In order to prepare, individuals and organizations from around Portland will meet Saturday, May 8th from 9:30am to 4pm at the First Unitarian Church (1011 Southwest 12th Avenue, Portland) to decide which of the resolutions which have been drafted will be submitted to the National Assembly (click here for Sisters' resolution). Although registration for the event is closed, observers are still very welcome! This event will then end with a celebration of music at 4pm! For more information, contact Brendan Phillips, Community Organizer, at brendan@sistersoftheroad.org or (503) 222-5694 ext. 13.

Thank you for your support of Sisters and this work and continue to check our Take Action page for upcoming events!
