Hello Friend!

Down here at Sisters - we're all wishing for the sun - how about you? While we wait, check out all the great stuff happening around here!

Sisters' Co-founder and Director Recognized for their Work

Earlier this month, Genny Nelson, Sisters' co-founder, was presented with an honorary doctorate by the University of Portland in recognition of her work to create "a world in which poverty is a memory, violence is mere history, and the brilliance and glory of every human being shines forth like the sun," as the editor of the university's Portland Magazine, Brian Doyle, so perfectly put it.

Monica Beemer, our Director, was also honored this month - by Yes! Magazine in their People We Love section. The magazine noted the significant work Monica has done to increase Sisters' visibility and relationships with our community.

Congratulations to Genny and Monica!

Systemic Change Update
Personalist Center Changes, Empowered Voices, Community Dialogues

Personalist Center Space Changes – We need your help!
In order to better support our core mission of nonviolent community organizing, we are making changes in our Personalist Center (PC).

To do this we need to do some construction!  We could use the following materials and/or helpful connections to places that have these materials:
  • Sheetrock
  • Plywood for floors
  • Twelve 14 footers or 2 x 12’s
  • Windows: We have a 12 feet span that we are covering and we want at least one window that can open.  Height: 4 foot or 5 foot height, tempered, double pained, and insulated.
For more information, please contact Devin at 503-222-5694 ext. 16 or devin@sistersoftheroad.org.  Please DON’T just bring any of the above to us - contact Devin first.  Thank you! Click here to read more about these changes.

The Empowered Voices Media Project has begun and participants are creating amazing projects! Click here to read more about this new project at Sisters.

Sisters' Systemic Change Team held a Community Dialogue to engage with community members and seek input on our new changes. Read more about our first Community Dialogue here.

The Movement to End Poverty is in Full Gear
Please join us!

June 22, the United States Social Forum (USSF) begins and runs until June 26th. The USSF is a movement-building process for transformative social change. More than 20,000 people are expected!

Locally, Sisters has been very involved in the work to prepare for the USSF as part of the People's Movement Assembly (PMA's) in Portland. Nationally, the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC - of which Sisters is a member) will demand guaranteed health care and housing for everyone in the US.
