RIP Utah Phillips

Rosalie will be joined by the likes of Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, Hanz Araki, Anne Weiss, Andrew Calhoun, and Winterfolk founder and artistic director, Tom May. Utah’s sons Brendan and Duncan will host the show, and will play with Utah’s dear friends Mark Ross and Ben Pearl.

Saturday February 14th, time TBA, our Civic Action Group will hold an Old Town Chinatown neighborhood clean up.

There has been a lot going on in our Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood recently including an increase in drug use and violent behavior. One way we are trying to address this is through building more community, so we are coming together for a clean up.

Your work during the cleanup would be welcome!  Please RSVP to Devin at (503) 222-5694 ext. 16, or e-mail devin @ sistersoftheroad.org.

Sisters Image

Please join us for a discussion on Wednesday, February 25th from 12pm - 1:30pm at Multnomah County’s Central Library.

Sisters Of The Road’s Speaker Bureau members and staff will present a reading and discussion of the organization’s research which has been compiled in the book, Voices from the Street: Truths about Homelessness from Sisters Of The Road, consisting of the interviews of 515 homeless individuals residing in Portland, Oregon.  We will also discuss Sisters’ database and the potential use of data for policy makers, community groups, non-profits, universities and students.

Check out coverage of Sisters Of The Road from the Portland Observer. In the week leading up to Sisters’ Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March and Celebration, the Observer gave us a front page story entitled “Drum Majors for Justice” (referencing a famous MLK, Jr. speech made shortly before his assassination) which can be read here.

Sisters Still Has Need

Please Give $30 for our 30th Anniversary Fund
These are economically challenging times. We are worried about this year, and we know many people are feeling the pinch of the times. The basic health of our community is at risk, and we anticipate fewer services & supports for those experiencing homelessness and/or extreme poverty. Over 1,500 people are already sleeping on the streets every night in Portland. In these times, Sisters' work is more important than ever, not only providing hot, nutritious meals, hospitality & living wage jobs, but working on long-term solutions to homelessness and poverty. We couldn’t do our critical work without your support. If everyone who was able donated $30 for our 30th Anniversary we would be financially secure for 2009 and heading into the future. We know not everyone can and many of you already give in diverse ways—thank you! $30 from EACH of us who can possibly spare it is all it takes. Thank you for believing in our community and systemic solutions—you make our work possible every day!
