Winterfolk 21: In Honor of Utah Phillips

Please Save the Date for our annual Winterfolk benefit concert, Saturday, February 7 at the historic Aladdin Theater!

The focus of this year’s event is in honor of Utah Phillips, beloved friend and ‘soul of Winterfolk’ who passed away this year. The show will be hosted by his sons Brendan and Duncan, and accompanied by Utah’s dear friends Mark Ross and Ben Weaver.

Headlining the event is the formidable Rosalie Sorrels, also a longtime friend and oftentimes musical partner of Utah’s. Rosalie just released a highly acclaimed album of his songs, along with some of her own, which has been nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album! Rosalie is a true folk legend.

Other performers will include:

  • Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, who released a new CD in 2008 and have been touring extensively since turning over the reins of Artichoke Music to the capable hands of Richard Columbo and his wonderful staff.
  • Hanz Araki and friends, virtuostically talented Celtic artist on flute, pennywhistle, and Japanese shakahatchi. Hanz also has a marvelous singing voice and a immense repertoire, spanning traditional and contemporary styles.
  • Anne Weiss, powerful blues-influenced Portland Chanteuse, who also has a highly rated new album out this year.
  • Andrew Calhoun, longtime Portland favorite, president of the very important acoustic label Waterbug Records, also with a new, important release in 2008, “Bound to Go”; focusing on songs and spirituals from the African/American Folk tradition. Andrew will be traveling all the way from Chicago to participate.
  • Tom May and friends. The founder and Creative Director of Winterfolk, Tom will also contribute songs that relate to Utah Phillips and the great American West that he loved.
