Food Justice

Sisters of the Road prioritizes the right to locally sourced, culturally appropriate food for all. We have advanced the food justice movement in Portland long before this concept came to prominence, filling a critical role in Old Town by providing low-cost, healthy, and delicious meals to anyone who needs one.

With our cafe temporarily closed, our food justice efforts are composed of legislative movements and community engagement opportunities.

Learn more about those efforts below:

  • Fresh Change is one of our most beloved programs! We have partnered with Portland Farmers Market since 2014 to make fresh food and the market space accessible to our community.

Traditionally accessible through barter work, we have revamped our programming during our cafe closure. We’re partnering with other local nonprofits that work with communities often left out of the food justice conversation (youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women) to host market tour events.

Through these events we build relationships, promote dignity, and start important conversations about food insecurity, and equity.

    Stay tuned for 2024 programming!

  • We recently joined the Oregon Hunger Task Force as voting members to advocate for Oregonians who are hungry or at risk of hunger.
